The communal lives of women, especially at work is another common theme in Barrington Watson's work. He is famous for producing works of art that depict women gathering at the market, or doing housework or chatting and gossiping (“kas-kas”).

“I find Jamaican women very sensual and attractive and beautiful, from the country girl to high society.”

The first in Barrington Watson’s “Mother and Child” series in Jamaica's National Gallery collection was painted while he was in England as part of his diploma at the Royal College of Art in London.

Mother and Child II and III are later works in this series. They are representative of Barrington Watson's portraits of women in their daily lives, demonstrating his accomplishment in rendering the female form while at the same time charging them with erotic overtones. In this sense, his female paintings can be likened to those of the 19th century impressionist Renoir; worldly, robust and engaging.
