The Age of Wisdom, 1983 - 1984

Barrington Watson's oeuvre includes hundreds of paintings and drawings on paper.They represent a wide-range of themes, including history painting, genre, portraits and self-portraits, nudes, erotica, the landscape and the still life.

Barrington Watson's work represents a fusion of cultural interests both European and Caribbean. From a Caribbean perspective, he visualises images of cultural and historical significance in his work, narratives so crucial to continuity within black culture.

Many of his paintings are figurative and attempt to accurately depict the Caribbean's temperate influences, its light, its colour, tropical feel and vagaries of the Caribbean's flesh tones. Petrine Archer  Barrington prefers to paint portraits because they are more challenging and women are often the subject of his work.

The Age of Wisdom — Barrington's Mother  is a work that is special to Barrington because it is a portrait of his mother that took two years to complete because she thoroughly enjoyed sitting for the painting. The original remains in Barrington's collection.
