Barrington Watson's oeuvre includes hundreds of paintings and drawings on paper. They represent a wide-range of themes, including history painting, genre, portraits and self-portraits, nudes, erotica, the landscape and the still life.

Barrington Watson's work represents a fusion of cultural interests both European and Caribbean. From a Caribbean perspective, he visualizes images of cultural and historical significance in his work, narratives so crucial to continuity within black culture.

Many of his paintings are figurative and attempt to accurately depict the Caribbean's temperate influences, its light, its colour, tropical feel and vagaries of the Caribbean's flesh tones. Petrine Archer

The communal lives of women, especially at work is another common theme in Barrington Watson's work. He is famous for producing works of art that depict women gathering at the market, or doing housework or chatting and gossiping (“kas-kas”).

“I find Jamaican women very sensual and attractive and beautiful, from the country girl right up to high society.” Jamaica Gleaner

The first in Barrington Watson’s “Mother and Child” series in the Jamaican National Gallery’s collection “was painted while [he] was in England as part of [his] diploma at the Royal College of Art in London: it was [his] 'major task'. Jamaica Gleaner

Mother and Child II and III are later works in this series. They are representative of Barrington's portraits of women in their daily lives, demonstrating his accomplishment in rendering the female form while at the same time charging them with erotic overtones. In this sense, his female paintings can be likened to those of the 19th century impressionist Renoir; worldly, robust and engaging. Petrine Archer
